Destruction of Bridges

During the third week, we tested the structural integrity of the bridges; such as the load capacity and safety of the design. As the bridges were tested, I was quite surprised by how much weight the bridges were actually able to hold. The Eminem Bridge that was designed and built by Muhammad Mubasit failed at one-hundred and forty pounds, his bridge broke the record by ten-pounds. The destruction of the bridges gave me an experience that I will never forget. Proper planning and patience is key to success.

What I learned about the circuit is that electricity can make things do lots of action and movements also how electricity is used . Also that for electricity to travel everything has to be connected a certain way

      On the trip last week on Monday we saw many bridges and every single one had helped me on my model bridge for my project. My favorite bridge is the Verrazano Bridge because of its structure and how it is currently under construction. It was nice seeing the water from above and seeing the view from the bridges. Even though we did not stop that often to see the bridges, we were able to see their structures. That is why bridges are one of the most important inventions.

I thought that my bridge would hold hold way more than it did. I predicted that my bridge would hold 20 pounds. It actually held 15 pounds which was very unexpected. I still predicted close to what my actual weight was so that is somewhat good because iwent with my game plan.hl

Bridges Trip

The whole class took a trip to see a whole variety of bridges. The views of the bridges were very nice and a beauty to see. Doc was driving the bus to all the bridges on the yellow school bus. It was a nice thing to see some bridges I only drove over and never really observed.

I found this part of the course to be interesting. We spent most of the time testing and exploring how circuits work and how to manipulate the current and power to later launch a rocket. I found the rocket work more interesting. With the help of the naval midshipmen and Micheal Walrond's efforts we were able to increase the Amps enough to spark the igniters. The launch we had was definitely a surprise after the rocket got blown in two, but we finally got a successful launch.

A Trip Like No Other

On Monday, we went on a trip in the yellow bus. We drove through New York City and Brooklyn observing bridges and new ones being built. Major bridges we observed were the George Washington, Tappan Zee, and Verrazano Bridges. My understanding of bridges grew throughout this trip. It certainly complemented my prior knowledge of bridges.

Fun fact:These walls are built with special material for noise cancellation. Denizens on the opposite side of the highway are prone to the "noise" of speeding vehicles.

And the best part... I won an ice cream for guessing a number closest to the amount of major bridges we were bound to encounter on our journey!

Working with circuits

Foe our last week of class we've been given circuit boards to play, and learn with.   It was ment to show you the connections between each component.  In the box came a book that gave us a 101 different combination that allow use to use every piece to its full extent.  After we finished connecting pieces we would show it to our teachers to confirm that we understood the exercise.

My favorite bridge

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel has my favorite design overall.  The location of it is : Cape Charles and Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA.  The bridge itself was finished in 1964.  The coast was $200 million.  The length is 89,760 feet total length 79,200 feet bridge length.  The bridge type is a beam/tunnel, made out of steel and concrete, and it's main purpose was to be a road way.

During the last week we have been working on a electric kit. This electrical kit has taught me the different and various ways that current can travel. Even though I didn't want to do this assignment I'm glad that Mr. Chelule and Doc forced me to complete it

Field Trip

The day of our trip finally arrived. It was a nice sunny day and people were smiling everywhere. We went to New York and Hoboken to see many bridges. I learned how bridges are built to look nice and strong. The design of the bridge might give the bridge a nice look but it is used for strength. I enjoyed watching these bridges that day. One crazy thing that day that had everyone laughing was our driver. Our bus driver went through many tolls and drove towards our death. Just kidding, but it was a fun experience that made our day great.

Breaking The Bridges

Breaking our bridges especially mine was kinda heart breaking. I put so much time and effort into my bridge to let it just break. But it was a good experience and it suprised  me how much my bridge could hold up. While recording everyones bridge breaking it was kind of wierd how each bridge broke according to there design of the bridge. Overall I enjoyed being in this class that taught me so much about bridges and engineering.

Sight Seeing

During the second week of Bridges and Electronics, we decided to take a trip to see the bridges around New York and New Jersey. We saw many bridges around New York and New Jersey. Many of the bridges we saw looked very interesting, especially the Brooklyn Bridge. The reason why I believe the Brooklyn Bridge is unique in terms of its structural design is because, the bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge. One fun fact about the Brooklyn Bridge is that it has been dubbed the eighth wonder of the world. For me, the Brooklyn Bridge was the main focal point of the trip.

Lift-Off!!

Traditionally, in previous years the Bridges and Electronics class has focused mainly on bridges and electrical circuits. This year, we added a pinch Aerospace engineering to the mix. My class and I built and successfully launched a rocket. Throughout this class, building the rocket was probably the most challenging part. Despite many failed attempts at launching the rocket, we were successful in the end.
What I learned from this experience is that many projects aren't as easy as they appear to be.

My Favorite Bridge the Justin Sierra

My favorite bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge. It is located in San Fransisco,California. It is a red suspension bridge. The reason it is my favorite bridge is because it looks really cool and my favorite type of bridges are suspension bridges. This is why it is my favorite bridge

During this past week, we have been working with electronic circuits. This circuits have taught me many things that I did not even understand about conductors.

Malir River Bridge-- Pakistan

The Malir River Bridge is to date Pakistan's largest bridge which spans 5,000 meters. This bridge was inaugurated by Governor of Sindh, Dr Ishrat ul Ibad, on Wednesday, February 04, 2009. The cost of this bridge is 1.2 billion Pakistani Rupees which is approximately14 million dollars and the money was funded by the government of Pakistan. The bridge has been shortened by 17 miles so a new town can be built. 

Circuits in Electronics

As our class finished learning about bridges part, we now moved to something that was pretty interesting. We started to learn about Electronics. I was really amazed how the energy was flowing through these little pieces such as the amplifiers, resistors, etc. There were many different things or circuits you can make and some of the circuits that I made are Alarm Circuit, Light Police Siren, Voice Light Diode, and many other cool circuits. I also learned that if you have even one wrong connection like flipping the battery side nothing works. A small box of Snap Circuits is a great way to learn about electronics.

Trip to the Bridges around New York and New Jersey

Verrazona-Narrows Bridge During the second week of school, our class took a trip to go and see the different bridges around New Jersey and New York. We visited about 25 bridges. The first bridge we stopped at was Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. While we were driving on it, it looked pretty long but did not look that high off of the river. But when we took a stop at the side of the road to take a better look at the bridge, the bridge was really big and really high off the water. The other thing that was pretty shocking to me was when our teacher told us that the wires inside the cables that hold the bridge can go around the planet earth about four times. We saw few other bridges such as George Washington bridge and Tappan Zee Bridge. Another bridge is being built along the side of Tappan Zee Bridge to make it more convenient for people to travel. It was really worth going and visiting those bridges and i would encourage others to go and take a look at some of these  amazing works.  George Washington Bridge

The Last View

Over the last few days, the class was ordered to build some types of electronic contraptions as seen to the left. We had to build and make some models that came with the book containing examples of different designs to built. It's easy to put the piece together because of how the book explains it; yet it was not challenging. Although, trying to understand how it works was confusing a bit. One example is the playing of music. Chelule explained that the power controls the music. The more power it has a different rhythm will play. Well, this is my blog, I hoped you enjoyed my blog. During the course of this week we worked with electronics upon breaking of bridges last week. We learned how electricity operates and how it's dependable on many difference sources. I also learned how electricity can only be formed by some sort of bond and not much independent. I'm glad that I was given the opportunity to really observe how electricity works and functions.

My Favorite Bridge

My favorite bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge in California. The bridge is a suspension bridge and it is very large. It is 3 miles long ! The bridge channels from San Fransisco to the Pacific Ocean. The construction started in 1933 and ended in 1937.

  After a couple weeks of breaking our backs to create a bridge, we compete to hold the highest weight in the class; it finally comes to a conclusion. This moment is a moment I call the 'moment of truth' because it comes down to who put in the most maximum amount of effort in there bridges. My bridge held the 3rd highest weight in the class averaging 72 Lbs. This was a wonderful experience and I enjoyed every moment of it. This week we move on to circuits, the electronics portion of our class.

Breaking the Bridges by Justin Sierra

Last Wednesday and Thursday we broke our bridges that we made from balsa wood and glue. The amount of weight the bridges held ranged from 15 pounds to 100 pounds. My bridge held 20 pounds and was the first one to go. It was really fun seeing the bridges break.

After a lot of time put into building our bridges out of pure wood, and glue. We have finally broke them. My bridges has held the third most in the class with 80 pounds. My bridge held basically what I predicted. Which is 75 pounds. Now that we are done with the bridges we are doing circuits, which will teach us about electronics. This course have taught us about a lot of different things.

Field trip

During my trip to see bridges , I thought it was going be boring. But as we went through the Verrazano Bridge the structure seemed to intrigue me. I noticed that this particular bridge had two roadways. As we were on the trip we we able to see some other bridges from a distance. It allowed me to gather ideas for our bridge that we are currently building . With this trip we were able to understand what bridges really can withstand and hold.

I went on this trip to New York with my class. We came across 8 monumental bridges that were well developed and structured. We even made a stop to observe the bridge in another angle, and to see the river below it. I really enjoyed my sight seeing of the bridges and was very significant aspect to my understanding of bridges and engineering as a whole. I hope to do something like this again later on in my life.

Field trip

This week we went on a field trip over many bridges. I never realized how many bridges there were until this field trip. We went on at least 8 bridges in a matter of 3 hours. I had a lot of fun on this trip traveling all around New Jersey, and then to New York with this class. It was a great experience. We also went to a sight learning how bridges are made, and the materials that are needed to build them. This was a very fun, and educational week for me in this class.

The Flightless Copter

After a week of diligence and assistance from Muhammad Mubasit, I have managed to construct a miniature helicopter. It was made from materials of various shapes and sizes. It features a motor that enables the propellers to rotate at a steady speed. It is powered by 4 AA batteries. However, it does not fly due to the many holes and limited power output from the motor.

The bottom of the helicopter was created first. Then followed the motor, the top, and the blades, in that order. The motors were last to be attached to the model. The most difficult part of this small project was tightening the minuscule screws.

I certainly learned the importance of patience while creating this helicopter. I had originally expected to finish it in a day but later realized the improbability of that idea. I call it... The Flightless Copter!

           The Golden Gate Bridge is located in California. Its one of the biggest bridge tourist attraction its a suspension bridge. Before the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay. San Francisco was the largest American city still served primarily by ferry boats. It was built for huge boats to pass under and ferries so tourist can take pictures and is one of the most famous bridge in the United States of America. Built in April 19, 1937. opened May 27, 1937.

THE DRIVE

Our class went from New Jersey to New York for a fun trip. Doc drove the whole class there to see bridges. The picture of the bridge that you see up there is called the Bayonne Bridge. This was one of bridges that the class viewed when we crossed the border to New York. Right now, the Bayonne Bridge is going under construction. The construction of the new bridge is being built on top of the old bridge. The reason for the construction was for big cargo ships to pass through under the bridge. When Doc was driving the class back to St. Benedict's Prep, he was driving fast. They say slow and steady wins the race but Doc speeds through the race. Even though the class was a bit scared of Doc's "superb" driving from time to time, we still had a great time.

On Monday our class took a trip to visit all of the well known bridges of the surrounding area. Personally I really enjoyed it because all the different ways that these bridges are structured was quite amazing. Also it was a great time to spend it with friends. I really enjoyed this trip.

Bridge Tour

The Bridge Tour was an interesting trip. To see actual bridges while taking this class and learning more and more about bridges everyday, allowed me to think of more bridge designs that I could invent in class. I didn't really have a favorite bridge on this trip because none of the bridges were as exciting as famous bridges around the world. I just took different ideas of the several different bridge structures and of how compact the base of the bridge was. The most exciting part of the trip was when we got to get off of the bus and see the bridge physically near the body of water it was crossing.

We went on a trip to visit some beautiful bridges by New York. It was a nice experience and it was nice to be with my class mates and enjoy the site of the bridges. We took pictures and went to eat during the trip. We all had fun and we're happy we had this trip as a class. It really helps our perspective of bridges and electronics. Hope we can have more like this in the future.

On monday 11, 2015, we went to New York to see bridges. The bridges that we saw were beautiful, and enormous. It was a really good trip because I was able to see different types of bridges.

My favorite bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate bridge is my favorite bridge because it is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
Many people travel very long distances just to see the bridge. I have never seen it, but I would love to one day.

Favorite Bridge

This bridge is called the Minato Bridge. The Minato Bridge is located in Osaka, Japan. The bridge was built from 1973 to 1974. The construction of the bridge cost about 117 million dollars in US currency.
This Minato Bridge is a double deck cantilever truss bridge. It's the third longest cantilever truss bridge in the world with a span of 983m and a width of 22.5m. This is my favorite bridge because of the location and the color of the design. The bridge looks stunning during the day, but at night the view is a sight to behold.

Shanghai's Nanpu Bridge

Among the major bridges in the world, I found Nanpu Bridge to be most interesting. The construction of this bridge began on December 15, 1988 and was finished by June 20, 1991. The length of Nanpu Bridge is 8,346 m. With a bridge height of 46 m over the water, ships of up to 55 thousand tons are able to navigate bellow the bridge. The significance of this bridge is that it connects the Zhongshan South Road and Lu Jiabing Road across the Huangpu River. Located in Shanghai, China, this bridge utilizes a creative spiral approach to aid in the development of the Pudong District as well as save space. Nanpu Bridge's special engineering and location makes it an attraction to travelers, a more glorious ingenuity to behold by night. Nanpu Bridge is one of many creations that exemplifies the versatility of the engineering profession.

 One of my favorite bridges in the world is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco,  California. I have always loved the bridge since I was a kid because many movies and shows have scenes in the bridge and it is beautiful. The design and the appearance is very spectacular. It's very beautiful when it is during nighttime and they turn on the lights and it makes me shine and I also love it because of it color.

The golden gate bridge is a Suspension bridge  spanning the Golden gate and strait, the mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco bay  and the Pacific Ocean.The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California,, and the United States. 

It has been declared one of the great wonders of the world by the American society of civil Bridges. the Golden Gate Bridge is known as "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world". It opened in 1937 and was, until 1964, the longest suspension bridge span in the world in the world, at 4,200 feet.
